'Titus, A Comrade of the Cross' is a runaway success in Christian fiction from the turn of the century. It was written for the purpose of bringing young people to emotionally invest in the story of Jesus and to be spiritually set alight by it.
Titus is a young boy, born to a down on his luck fisherman who has turned towards violent crime and a downtrodden mother. His main companion, his brother Stephen is crippled as a result of being beaten by their cruel father, however he remains kind and sweet.
After hearing of Jesus Titus is brusque at first, dismissing the possibility that Jesus would help them as 'heathen greeks'. He warns Stephen off his hopes of healing and he is hostile and wary of the people of Jerusalem and fears that they would not benefit from the new preacher in the area. He even looks forward to fighting the Jews although he does not approve of the theft his father is involved in.
In their quest to escape their father and find peace, Stephen and Titus strike out, prompted by a terrible accident suffered by a neighbour's infant. They brush the Roman empire the wrong way, consider the cause of Barabbus, are imprisoned and consider carefully the idea of rebellion before finally coming as new and liberated people, together at the foot of the cross at history's most significant crucifixion.
Florence Morse Kingsley was an accomplished writer of spiritual fiction who managed, despite creating fictional narratives and characters, to remain dogmatically faithful to the contents and spirit of the King James Bible and therefore most contemporary protestant doctrines. This book is suitable for all ages and particularly suitable for devotional reading with children.

Clearly the content of the origianl writing is not part of this review. This is for the hardcopy version, visibly featuring the black cover with gold leaves and lettering. The unfortunate aspect is that the reprint looks like a very bad photo copy. They did not retype or improve the typeset at all. Additionally, the size of the photo copy is about 2/3 the size of the page, rendering it even more difficult to read. We returned it.Product details

I was thrilled be reading this book right before Easter. Perfect timing. The plot had an interesting and riveting twist, that I will not spoil for future readers. I highly recommend this book for all interested in imagining for themselves more vividly Jesus' ministry. I will probably read this again, this time out loud to my children. The only disappointment I faced, was that the story had to come to an end. Superbly written tale. A wonderful little book to hand down to your children and grandchildren.
I love Historical Biblical Fiction written buy authors who personally know and believe in our God & Savior JESUS CHRIST.
It's getting so difficult lately to find book's that are Scriptural, & Portray the ONE TRUE BIBLICAL JESUS.
In all type of books, be they fiction or non-fiction, so many authors are writing of "another JESUS" which the WORD OF GOD gives clear warnings against, clearly starting that if anyone preaches ( writing about is the same as someone preaching ) another JESUS... let them be accursed.
Now I hunt for books about the Lord Jesus Christ... be they fiction. or non-fiction... and I'm not one to be petty and judge on book formatting, or correct editing... If a book is written non-fiction or fiction, I know certain licence is taken on some made up, or little mentioned Scriptural characters.
Or on the different Mary's... some authors mix the Mary's up. Some don't.
See, in Christian Biblical Fiction, that doesn't matter...
I've read great books where Scriptural Mary's have been mixed up and critics really put down the whole book because of it... and the same with editing and formatting...
And the the thing is in those books, CHRIST is being Glorified, Portrayed, and Worshiped according to the Scriptures.
We should not be like the world. Where hairs are split about Christian Fictional Books, where Jesus Christ is Glorified. Biblically, and according to the Scriptures, the WORD, who created all things. and in HIM all things are held together. To Christ JESUS belongs all Power, and Glory, both now and forevermore, Amen....
So, if the book Proclaims JESUS CHRIST crucified, & risen from the dead, THE "I AM",
the ALPHA & OMEGA, that every knee will bow down to & every tongue will confess that CHRIST is the KING of kings & LORD of lords to the Glory of the FATHER, even if certain characters are mixed together ( like the Mary's ) or the editing, and formatting are off... as a BIBLE BELIEVING, BORN AGAIN CHRISTIAN.... Do what is good, and worthy of good fruit..
Give it 5 stars. We're not of this world so we don't have to judge according to the world's judgement...
Now about this book... The author knows JESUS Personally, and I truly loved this book.
I'm going to buy the next in the series
Please, brothers and sisters, remember... that were not to be conformed to this world. We have been crucified with Christ, and it's not we who live, but CHRIST who lives in us, and the things we do in this life, we do by FAITH in the SON OF GOD who Loves us and gave himself for us... so, we are dead to the world, and ALIVE and free in CHRIST JESUS.
Oh. What Glorious Freedom We Have In Jesus Christ Our LORD.
One of my all-time favorite stories! This tale set during the lifetime of Jesus is beautifully written with touches of humor woven into the dialogue. A great read-aloud for families. This particular edition is odd because the pages appear to just be copied from another smaller page layout, leaving lots of white space around the edges. If you can get past the weird formatting, however, the story is well worth it!
As a believer, I enjoyed the story more than anticipated. What imagination! The weaving of the fictional characters into the gospel story was fascinating. I regretted reaching the end.
This book is good, but beware - this edition is missing pages 43-46. I enjoyed everything up to that point, so it is a bummer that I shall have to purchase a different edition if I don't want to miss those four pages. NOTE I reached out to Forgotten Books, and they said this error exists in the master facsimile they used to produce the book, so it is not just an issue of one bad copy. ALL the copies of this edition will have the same problem. As I said, it's a good book, but this edition is unforgivably flawed.
Titus is a well-crafted, superbly-written story that had me glued from start to finish. I simply could not put the book down! The writer, Florence Morse Kingsley, was remarkably and wonderfully talented. Her descriptions of surroundings are exquisite, often imbuing feelings of the divine. The dialogue is rich and varies with each character, who are skillfully portrayed. I was so moved by the story, as I always am when reading about Jesus, but this story in particular, being so well-written, just moved me beyond all I had expected. I think if you give this book as a gift, you should give a box of tissues along with it! Overall, I think this book is amazing!
